Our pilot program, the paper beads campaign is a blend of immediate relief and sustainable development. The women in the Acholi district of Kampala Uganda, who are displaced from the long running conflict, produce paper beads in the Acholi quarters and then ship the beads for us to market and distribute in retail outlets and online.
There are 12 figurehead women for the program that are each divided into groups of four (according to the program that they wish to invest into). At the point of purchase, there are pictures of the women, their biographies, and the programs that would like their money to help support. After shipping, marketing, and distribution, the money from bead sales is divided into paying the women for the beads (for their immediate needs) and then between the funds for sustainable programs.
