Alene Munyemana, the head of the Rwanda Soles program, escaped the genocide in 1993 after losing half of her family. She is now married and a mother of three, but believes that only awareness will prevent these atrocities from happening again. For this reason, she has done interviews with NPR in Chicago, she travels to colleges, high schools and middle schools to speak about the situation she endured.
The Rwanada soles program is dedicated to getting shoes for the individuals who need them in Rwanda. Unlike many organizations that give continuous donations, however, we also believe that aid can destroy a local economy, build dependency, and hinder any sustainable growth. For this reason we will send shoes to an area for the creation of a business. We will hold a shoe drive, send the shoes, but these shoes will be creating a business. We can literally create businesses through capital creation.
Donors can also “sponsor” the shoes for the children in the area after seeing a picture of them on the internet and a short biography. This allows the donating option to continue, while it will stimulate the economy there and open the option for traditional retail sales in the area. There doesn’t need to be continuous donations from here (although there could be, but only while stimulating the economy there) this way gives people jobs and shoes.
